Ever since I started blogging two and half month ago, I’ve heard here and there this golden advice from experienced bloggers that the early you get your own domain name, the better. “The time to buy a domain name is when you first start blogging“, said engtech at InternetDuctTape.com in his excellent article “The Biggest Mistake a Blog Can Make is Not Owning Its Own Name“. If you have a blog and want to know why this is, read that article.
I think to me the most appealing aspect of having my own domain name is the ability to move my blog anywhere I want while keeping the same address (not that I want to leave the wonderful WordPress.com now ;-). Besides having an easy-to-remember address is quite neat too.
With that being said, I still hadn’t wanted to go through all the hassle of finding a domain registrar, configuring and managing stuff, until I came across this nice feature called “domain mapping” offered by WordPress.com, which basically takes care of everything for you. All you need to do is pick a domain name and click a couple of links. WordPress.com will be the domain registrar, configure the DNS for you and make sure your URLs redirect correctly. It charges you only $15/year which covers both the domain and the mapping. And the time it took me to set up? 3 minutes.
Of course, there is bigger price to pay for a domain change, biggest of all is Google PageRank. My walkingbetween.wordpress.com had a PageRank of 5 (if you want to know how to find out your PageRank, go here). Now I will have to start all over from… 0!

Congratulations on the domain!
PageRank is just part of the reason you want to get your own domain from the start.
Keep up the great work and you will get it back.
Thank you !! The first comment in the new era is always special… :-)
I suppose I am running out of excuses not to do the same.-
I say, why not!
:)
Totally agree with James. You just got started and it’s absolutely right time to move to a permanent domain. Don’t wait until you get more popular and other people regist walkingbetween.com and try to sell it to you. Your sacrafice will be far more. (I won’t why I didn’t think of it earlier. heehee)
haha i doubt i will ever be *that* popular…
but obviously i still didn’t do this early enough because the name i wanted the most, between.com, has already been taken… i don’t even know whether/how i can buy it
hehe, see, greedy is the human nature. :)
btw, thanks for introducing me about SharpReader. I finally had it installed. It’s indeed much easier than going to 10 blog sites in the morning.
I like the mail style design. Make the browsing much safer even in the office. hehe.
This is a feature that seems to no longer be offered because I just installed WP and there’s no such option on any menu..
